June 23rd, 2010 -- Frontenac Level III Results

Taking to the 401 Eastbound the 2010 Summer Fun Level III at Frontenac was a success on several fronts.

The weather held on Saturday morning after thunder and lightning early in the morning and held off even further on Sunday for pretty good shooting conditions for all competitors.

DoubleTap's own Michael Auger took 2nd in Open followed by Pat Harrison (4th) and Rob Elliot (5th). Josko Kovic of DoubleTap took 3rd in Production and Mike Burrell was tops in standard.

All are looking forward to top performances with their equipment from DoubleTap at the Provincials next week!

April 27th, 2010 -- DoubleTap Top Spots at Sharon GC & Tonawanda

March 23, 2010 -- DoubleTap Gun Success at Wentworth

Last weekend's Level II at Wentworth saw DoubleTap guns again taking the spotlight. Pat Harrison took top spot in Open with his DoubleTap gun and Rob Elliot was 3rd.

Both are really enjoying their hardware and finding great success with them.

The fine-tuning and attention to detail that they received from DoubleTap is taking them to the top!

DoubleTap open Gun Review: Pat Harrison

I decided that this might be a good time to build a new  gun, my current Open blaster is 12 years old, built for me by Millenium custom by the late John DeAngelo.

To start the 2010 season with something new seemed like a good idea. I had a number of parts in stock from past prize tables and trades, but needed a couple of components and someone to put it all together. I got to talking with Josko at DoubleTap Sports, and he was willing to take on the job.  I spec’d the new gun based on the one Rob E. Had just acquired, the design looked promising and Rob was very pleased with it.

We started with the SVI IMM base gun that I already had and removed the top end. It was replaced with a Caspian slide, Schuemann  hybrid ribbed barrel, Millennium Custom 3 chamber comp, Aftec extractor and all the rest of the parts from EGW. I’ve always had good experiences with these manufacturers and had no doubt of their quality.

Since I wanted to keep the existing top end functional as a Steel Challenge or Bianchi Cup there would be an additional challenge to fitting the gun together. The old top end was just too hard to make Major with, and the longer barrel with less porting should work better for IPSC. For Steel, the short light IMM top end shooting minor should work fine.
We went with Tri-top cuts on the top of the slide with a lightening “swoop” at the rear, leaving enough material for a cocking handle. The slide was also cut for the hybrid rib on the Schuemann barrel. All the other parts were fitted, the barrel was chambered and two hybrid holes drilled into the barrel. The comp also got some additional ports cut to aid in tracking during recoil. The top end was fitted to the frame, but because of my requirement to keep the old top end, it had to be done the hard way with no modification to the frame, only the slide could be filed to fit...a bit of a challenge. The slide was dovetailed for the slide racker, then all edges were broken. I hate having sharp corners or edges on my guns, they get used a lot and I don’t need the additional wear on my flesh.

On the bottom end the grip was reshaped and skateboard tape permanently applied to it. The trigger guard was slightly undercut and again no sharp edges were left.  A DoubleTap C-More scope mount was installed. This is one of the lowest and lightest scope mounts I have ever used!

Finally the gun was assembled and I took delivery. I must say I was very impressed with the fit of the gun. Everything was smooth and tight. In short it looked like a winner.
For my first trip to the range I took both guns, the old and the new. I really wanted to compare them side by side. The first thing I noticed was the additional weight of the new DT Open gun. It is a fair bit heavier than my previous one. The first rounds down range were a surprise as the new gun was considerably softer shooting than the old one. My Millenium was quite a bit more violent. I will note here that my loads were 8.5 grains of IMR 4756 which I shot at the USPSA Area 2 match. There they factored at 172PF which is around 1390fps. Due to the cold temps and the reverse temperature sensitivity of 4756, they were now going down the tube at 1500fps +/- . I now have dialled the load back and have  winter and summer major loads. Despite the fact that they were now factoring over 180PF the gun was very soft to shoot and the dot was tracking extremely straight, not only was the dot moving in a straight line, but this is the first Open gun I have ever had where the dot actually tracks straight up and down.

The only issue I had was there was as much movement below the point of aim as there was above. This was my fault, I had told Josko to go ahead and put the gun together with a 10# Wolff recoil spring despite his warning that it would likely need to go as light as an 8# .If I really relaxed it would lift and settle to to point of aim, but even a little grip pressure would cause it to dip. Despite the fact that it was over sprung and I was using Slide Glide on a very cold day, the gun functioned perfectly. I put over 200 rounds through it that first day with no malfunctions. There is nothing more satisfying than a gun that goes bang every time! I was so pleased with it I replaced the spring with a ISMI 10# spring which was lighter than the Wolff 10# (don’t ask me why) and took it down to the WNYPPL match at the Tonawanda Sportsmans Club. I’d like to say I won it that first day but the timing of the gun still wasn’t quite right and I clearly had not gotten it quite sighted in properly. I did however win the classifier stage and the gun showed great promise, again, no malfunctions.

Normally I would warn shooters against shooting a new gun in a match but this gun gave me a lot of confidence. When I returned I sheepishly got a new 8# Wolff spring from Josko and headed back to the range. Now the gun was tracking perfect.

Returning to Tonawanda this month the gun scored its first win including a very challenging stage that required quite a bit of precision shooting. Rob and I also scored  First and Second respectively with our DoubleTap guns at the recent Brant match separated by less than a percentage point.

The more I shoot it the more pleased I am with how it turned out. When I get dialled into it, it will be a real winner.

If you are looking for a new blaster, give Josko a shout, you won’t regret it.

PRODUCT REVIEW: STI Gun

I made the decision to purchase this gun from Double Tap Sports on the last day of the Ontario Provincial IPSC Championships.  I took delivery of it in mid-August but really started working with in early September.  Since then I have been testing various loads while assisting in the development of the next generation of plated 124 grain Aim Projectiles.  I was skeptical that I would be able to get a plated bullet to shoot out of this barrel and as well, I decided to withhold comment on this equipment until I’d had a proper chance to get several thousand rounds down range so I can see if any mechanical issues would arise.

Well…I think I have enough rounds through the gun now and I have to say that this has been as close to a plug-and-play full-race competition gun as I am ever likely to experience.  In the nearly 25 years I have been competing I have never had a gun that worked from the get-go without a fair bit of tuning, and I have certainly never bought a gun that didn’t at least need some extensive trigger work to bring it up to my standard.  I always do my own lock work since I am very fussy about my equipment and how it is set up, but all I needed to do to this gun was lightly INCREASE the trigger pull weight (believe it or not).  Since I never slap the trigger I need a break of around 22 to 24 ounces so that I can properly prep my shots, and this one was breaking at just under 16 without following!  This was a simple spring tweak and took all of two minutes for me to adjust.  I’m thrilled that for once I don’t have to spend my time messing around with this stuff at all.  I can just….you know….shoot it.

The gun is built on an STI 2011 frame and fitted with:
5” AET barrel (two ports)
Three port Millennium Custom compensator
Keonig hammer and EGW sear (fast lock time)
SVI Tri-glide trigger and spring
Tri-topped STI slide
Aftec extractor
STI aluminum frame.  The newest thing and I absolutely love it!

This is the first 2011 pistol I’ve had that just fits my hand without having to modify the grips extensively.  Obviously this gun is fitted with all the best parts.  Call me paranoid but the first thing I did when I took delivery was take it to pieces to check that everything was actually fitted correctly.  When you decide to spend your hard earned money on a custom race gun, you want it to be right.  I needn’t have worried, as the gun is fitted exactly the way it should be.  I’ve done a lot of work on these guns over the years and I know what I’m looking at.  I expect to get many years of reliable service out of this gun, with little more than regular maintenance and replacing or worn springs.

Performance-wise, the gun is very accurate and seems ideally configured to my current load (124 grain plated round nose Aim projectile in front of 8.4 grains of IMR 4756 for 1375 fps).  Unexpectedly, it shoots both flat AND soft and I have no problem blowing a single ragged hole out of hand-drawn 2” circle at twenty yards off-hand.  I keep thinking to myself that there’s no way that is a major load, so off I go to the chronograph to check and as always it is always right on the money at 170 power factor.  I just feel like I’m cheating.

I’m loving the gun.  Thanks loads to Josko and Mike for putting it together.

PRODUCT REVIEW: 3GM's & 3GM2 DVD's

Reviewed by: Pat Harrison www.patharrison.ca

The 3GM videos by Double Alpha Academy (3GM & 3GM2) are an excellent source for beginners or experienced IPSC/USPSA competitors.

For the new shooter, these DVD's feature instruction from three of the top shooters in the sport. Whether the beginner is interested in Open, Limited/Limited 10/Single Stack, or Production, expert instruction in each division is provided with essential techniques and skill sets.

For the experienced shooter, it is often beneficial to go back to the basics. In these videos, you have the knowledge of three top shooters (each with their own take on how each technique is performed), giving the advanced shooter more than one version to try in practice. This puts it ahead of other instructional videos which feature one shooter and one method of approaching each skill.

For myself, these videos have been instrumental in helping me return to form after taking a few years off from the sport.

AREA 7 SEES POSITIVE RESULTS

Mississauga, Ontario (August 10th, 2009) -- August 7-9th marked the 2009 edition of the Area 7 Championship at the Pathfinder Fish & Game Club in scenic Fulton, New York. Formerly named the Smith & Wesson Invitational and also the Miller, the event returned after a decade-long hiatus. Shooters from the US as well as Ontario, Nova Scotia and Quebec attended and shot the challenging stages. The traditional ‘Rosa’s Bar’ stage made a triumphant return and caught up several shooters but was still a welcome sight. Doubletap’s own Michael Auger was 12th overall in Open with 87.88% and his best stage was ‘How Fast is Too Fast?’ where he was 7th. Josko Kovic shot in Production Class and was 9th overall with 70.27%. Kovic’s best stage was ‘Barn Behaviour’ where he was 4th. Team Infinity member Mike Burrell had a fantastic match and finished 2nd overall in Limited with 92.18%. He won 3 stages and tied for first one more. A great event and great season to date. Fellow shooter Pat Harrison was 13th in Open Class with 87.28% and placing 2nd on 2 stages right behind Mike Auger.
